Social Action

Social Action at the O'Keeffe PTG

Like many members of the surrounding community, many members of the O’Keeffe PTG are involved in Social Action. While it’s not essential to be a social activist to be a member of the PTG, we, as a group, are making a concerted effort to make sure that all voices are heard and all people are supported.

The PTG sets time aside at every meeting for voices to be heard. Due to the nature of a short (90 minute) meeting, the PTG needs to adhere to an agenda. If you have an issue or a concern that you would like to share or an awareness that you would like to raise, please use the online contact form to email the O’Keeffe PTG. We will do our best to add your item to the agenda.

Social Action Events Supported by the PTG

Thanks for your interest in the Families as Partners in Madison Schools Virtual Summit held on February 20, 2021. Host partners Lapham-Marquette Parent Teacher Group and Madison Public Library are excited to share a recording of the opening keynote address by Chicago Alder and Community Organizer Jeanette Taylor on the topic of “Families Building Relationships and Power.”

Link to the recording on the Library’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBqHCpdtC1k

The address was followed by opportunities for participants to actively discuss, share resources, and strategize about the issues that mattered most to them in smaller groups. While the small group discussions were not recorded, please see the Padlet board of resources created by the Lapham-Marquette Parent Teacher Group for links to additional resources and ideas from the summit.

A few words about Madison Public Library’s commitment to Racial Equity: One of the guiding principles of the City of Madison’s Racial Equity and Social Justice Initiative (RESJI) is authentic, ongoing public engagement and participation, with the goal of changing the culture of our city – including addressing institutional racism. Equity is one of the strategic values of Madison Public Library, and both the Library and Library Board have issued public statements of commitment to Racial Equity.

To that end, the Library has eliminated late fines. The Library also maintains lists of Racial Equity Resources including multiple lists of materials for children, caregivers and educators.
